Eleven biking enthusiasts from Newtown, Powys have completed an epic challenge riding around the country on bright pink mopeds and raised more than £10,000 for Cancer Research Wales.
Riders Steve Morrell, Hywel Thomas, Mike Jones, Nigel Whittington, John Jarman, Gary Williams, Chris Woolnough, Simon Evans, John Wilde, Graham Jones and Llew Whittington braved the weather as they rode their bright pink 49cc Honda Vision Mopeds on the eight day journey.
Setting off on their 1,000 mile trek from Newtown on Saturday May 17 the team followed the South and West Wales coastlines, taking in Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Swansea, Pembroke, Carmarthen, Aberaeron, before heading North towards Aberystwyth, Pwllheli, Caernarfon, Bangor, Anglesey, Conway, and Llangollen – returning to Newtown a week later.
The committed team have now topped their £10k target and raised an amazing £10,370, all of which will go directly to Cancer Research Wales.
Steve Morrall said: “For me this has been one of the best and most emotional experiences I have ever been involved with. From start to finish I have smiled and laughed my way around Wales with a group of people who I have become great friends with. We have all been humbled by people’s stories and their generosity to give to such a worthy cause. I would do it all again tomorrow.”
Laura Priddle, Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research Wales, said: “Hywel, Mike, and the team put so much effort into organising and completing the ride and devoted a week of their lives to the cause. To raise so much money is a massive achievement and one that we truly appreciate. We’re not only proud of them, but also all those supporters who cheered them on along the way.”
