Statement: Brecon Beacons Night Hike Postponed

With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and in the interest of the safety of all involved, it is with great sadness that we have to announce the further postponement of our Brecon Beacons Night Hike. The event held in memory of Tom Walker, which was due to take place on Saturday 20th March 2021, will be rearranged for a future date.

Over the past few months, we have continued to work in close consultation with our event partner, JT Expeditions, to monitor the situation and discuss options in hope that the event could still be organised as planned. However, given the high number of covid-19 cases and the new highly contagious variant, there remains a high level of uncertainty as to whether we can safely run the event in March. Following recent press coverage, surrounding the group usage of the Brecon Beacons, there are also additional logistical concerns around holding the event at the iconic location at this time and we have a duty of care to do all that we can to help keep Wales safe during these difficult and worrying times. In the interests of the health and safety of our staff and participants, we have therefore taken the difficult but responsible decision to further postpone the event.

Having already postponed the event twice, in March and October last year, we know how disappointing this news will be for those of you have been busy training and raising funds. Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to make sure the event goes ahead at a future date, and at a time when we can safely come together to help light up the night sky for Tom, a young boy who inspired so many. Alongside JT Expeditions, we will coordinate a new event date and will share this information with you when available. We propose to reassess the situation on w/c 5th April 2021, and will offer an update shortly afterwards.

In the meantime, we are excited to be supporting the Walker family as they launch their new event in aid of Tom’s fund at Cancer Research Wales: Walk for Tom.

On the weekend of Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 March, the Tom Walker Fund are holding a virtual event to help raise funds in aid of Cancer Research Wales. Wherever you live and whatever your age or ability, participants are invited to go for walk to help fund lifesaving research for cancer patients in Wales, in honour and memory of Tom.

Perhaps you could follow your normal daily route, OR why not do something completely different, like Tom’s family, who will be walking around their local wood, but rather than doing it in the daytime, they will be doing it in the dark!

Full event details can be found on our website here.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and helping to raise vital funds to create better outcomes for everyone affected by cancer in Wales. The work of our pioneering scientists are transforming how people with cancer are diagnosed and treated, helping more people survive cancer than ever before. The health of our beneficiaries, their friends and families has always been at the forefront of what we do and that will never change.

We will continue to send updates and information relating to the challenge over the coming weeks and months, but if you have any questions then please do not hesitate to contact Event Manager, Dale Evans via email on: dale.evans2@wales.nhs.uk

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and we will be in touch again soon.
