Dr Mererid Evans
Dr Mererid Evans is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Velindre Cancer Centre, specializing in the management of patients with Head and Neck (H&N) Cancer.
Mererid studied medicine at the University of Wales, College of Medicine where she gained a BSc in pharmacology in 1993, en-route to completing her medical studies a year later. She was also awarded a PhD in 2001 for research looking at immune responses to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) in patients with cervical cancer. At present, Mererids’ major research interest is the role of HPV in the development of a subset of H&N cancers that involve the oropharynx (cancers of the tonsil, base of tongue and soft palate), cancers that appear to be increasing in incidence in Wales. Currently, Mererid is working with members of the HPV research laboratory at Cardiff University on a CRW-funded project to establish the true prevalence of HPV-related H&N cancers in South Wales; this work will hopefully lead future projects looking at new ways to prevent and treat the disease. In addition, Mererid is collaborating with colleagues at Velindre and the new PETIC centre at Cardiff University to optimize the use of PET for H&N radiotherapy planning which may lead to reduced toxicity and improved outcome for H&N cancer patients having radiotherapy in future.
